Safe Surfing on the Internet

Safety is everyone's business, in the real world and the virtual world.  Here are some places we'll visit to try our safe surfing skills.

Stop #1 - BrainPop

Let's start our trip with a visit to BrainPop to hear a quick history of the Internet.  Here we'll meet Tim and Moby.  Learning more about the Internet is the start to safe surfing.

Another fun Science site to visit is Beakman and Jax.  Do you see them in the Sunday comics?  Beakman and Jax have an interactive activity - The Internet.

Stop #2 - Web Evaluation Rubric

Tammy Payton is the webmaster for her elementary school in Indiana.  She has spoken at many conferences about school students surfing safely on the internet.  She created three rubrics to help students evaluate web sites.  Visit her rubric page - Intermediate Grades Rubric   Starting to evaluate web sites is another safety step.

Stop #3 - SafeKids.Com where you'll find tips, advice and suggestions to make your family's online experience fun and productive

Safe Kids - In your small group, check out how this site does on your rubric.

Stop #4 - Have you always wanted to visit The White House?  Let's go see what President Clinton is up to today.  How many points would you give The White House?

Stop #5 - We need to get more serious about safety rules for ourselves and everyone in the class.  Here are two suggestions:

Child Safe Search Engines - Use child safe search engines

Rules for Online Safety - Create a list of safety rules and follow them.

Now we'll go back to the classroom and work on our class list of Internet safety rules.
