Hourly Rate:  $17.73 - $18.62      Range 16      Step A – C, DOQ

Basic Job Purpose/Function:

Under supervision, works cooperatively with community groups, governmental and private agencies/organizations to plan, organize, provide and participate in public health education programs in accordance with Public Health Department policies and objectives.

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Assess community needs, plans, and implements health education programs for specific groups, communities, or a statewide program of limited scope.
  2. Interprets public health programs to groups through talks, discussions and consultation and facilitates conferences, meetings and workshops to further health education.
  3. Plans, conducts, or assists in conducting public health training courses serving as a consultant and resource person to all members of the health department, local health care providers, schools and community, assisting them in planning and implementing educational programs.
  4. Develops news releases, (pamphlets, reports, talks, radio and television programs, Exhibits, and other tools) for public education and information.  Completes written reports as necessary.
  5. Under supervision, plan, organize and participate in public health education that informs and helps people, individually and in-groups, to adopt and maintain healthy practices and lifestyles.
  6. Assists in conducting needs assessments, plan, implement, and evaluate health promotion programs for schools, community groups, and target populations.
  7. Publicize health education services through contact with community groups, local news media, and health fairs.
  8. Develop and maintain working relationships with other official and voluntary agencies concerned with the community’s health.
  9. Provide consultation to school districts in health education curriculum development and evaluation of the school health program.
  10. Maintain informal referral network of related health education resources for clients, schools, health department staff, and the community.
  11. Maintain health education materials (i.e. brochures, books, videos) for health education programs, and oversee their use.
  12. Coordinate the departments Emergency Preparedness planning efforts, attending regional and local meetings and supporting all aspects of Public Health Emergency Preparedness including report writing and tracking grant deliverables.
  13. Assist in annual budget forecasting for various programs.

Additional Job Duties:

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques and related tools/equipment to accomplish the basic function of this position, including any safety and/or legal requirements.  This may, but not necessarily, include specialized skills. 
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform this job.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be
  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Education or related field with at least two years experience desired related to community outreach, mobilization, and public relations.

Licenses, Certificates, and Other Requirements

  • Valid state driver's license in state of residence
  • Specific positions may require specialized training or certification.
